Let's make pastry basket & bread roses

My first posting for the New Year. Let's play with flour and sandwich bread to make pastry basket and bread roses.

My heart shape pastry basket & bread roses.

My first bread roses was using different method, you can refer here for the step by step method.
I've improved it by using a much easier method.

Bread Roses

Bread roses

Pastry cutter 2.5 inch and 3 inch.

10 slices of sandwich bread. Roll  the bread with rolling pin until as flat as possible and cut with pastry cutter. After cut, roll the bread pieces again.

You need 2 pieces x  3 inch cut out bread, 5 pieces x 2.5 inch cut out bread for a single rose. Overlap 1/4 inch on every piece of the cut out bread and roll the folded part with rolling pin. Remain one piece 2.5 inch cut out bread to roll into cylinder shape for the first petal. Squeeze the base to hold the shape.

Assemble the bread pieces follow the method from step 8 to 14 in my previous posting. You can click here to view the step by step pictures.

Put the bread roses in the muffin cup to bake for 15 mins at 180 deg c.

After 15 mins turn the bread roses upside down to bake for another 5 mins or until nicely brown and crispy.

Ta..... da... roses completed.

Mini Pastry Basket

 Ingredients.
700 gm plain flour
2 tsp salt
1 egg yolk
250 mls water
2 tbsp oil
1 egg white to use as gum

1/ Mix all the ingredients together and knead into a smooth and pliable dough. Or you can use your breadmaker to knead the dough. Rest the dough for 30 mins before use. If dough too soft add more flour to knead again until the dough is fairly stiff.

2/  Easier to use a pasta maker to roll and cut the dough. If you do not have a pasta maker, can use rolling pin to roll dough to 1/4 inch thick and cut the strips with a pizza wheel. Dust the dough with flour in between the rolling.

3/  Cut the pastry to 1/4 inch strips and dust with flour to prevent sticking together.

4/  Lay 12 strips parallel on a piece of plastic sheet. Place one long strip of dough perpendicular to the parallel strips. Unfold the folded strips over the perpendicular strip and fold them back over the perpendicular strips. Lay down the second perpendicular strip of dough next to the first strip with 1/4 inch apart. Unfold the folded parallel strips over the second strip.

5/  Place the aluminum muffin cup on top the weaved dough. Press the edges lightly with your finger tips before doing the somersault of the weaved dough. Slide your palm underneath the plastic sheet....

6/  And  flip over the weaved dough together with the plastic sheet, be careful make sure you don't flip too hard or else bye bye your weaved dough and you got to redo again.

7/  Remove the plastic sheet and trim off the access dough at the edge with a plastic knife.

8/  Take 3 pieces of dough strips and plait it into a rope for the basket handle .

9/  Plait another robe for the finishing of the basket.

10/  Brush some egg white on the plaited robe and lay around the edge of basket and press lightly. Bake at 180 deg c for 15 mins or until golden color.

11/  The finishing product of my mini basket.

Heart Shape pastry basket

This heart shape pastry basket take about 2 hours from start to finish.

Wrap the 4 inch heart shape cake pan with aluminum foil.

Lay 36 strips parallel on a piece of plastic sheet. Place one long strip of dough perpendicular to the parallel strips. Unfold the folded strips over the perpendicular strip. Take the parallel strips that running underneath the perpendicular strip and fold them back over the perpendicular strips. Lay down the second perpendicular strip of dough next to the first strip with 1/4 in apart. Unfold the folded parallel strips over the second strip. Continue this process until the weaving complete.

When finish weaving, press the edge of the dough. Flip the weaving dough onto the heart shape cake pan, trim the access dough at the edge with plastic knife. Follow the mini basket step as show above.

Plait a long robe, brush with egg white and seal the edge of the basket. Press lightly.

Use the extra dough to make the cover for the basket. Bake at 180 deg for 20 mins or until golden color.

Ta......da... pastry basket completed. You can fill it with candy, cookies, chocolate, etc...to give as gift.
In case you're hungry after making the basket, spread some butter on the baked bread roses, sprinkle with sugar and munch as snack. It's very crispy and fragrant..... provided you got the heart to eat the roses. :)

It's great for parties to use as centre piece to wow your guest. This basket is edible, don't worry you won't run to the toilet. The edge at the top basket is a bit untidy cos I overlook, didn't trim properly.

This posting is link to Foodie Friends Friday  and Walking on Sunshine. Friday Linky Party #27.

Have a wonderful week ahead. Enjoy yourself playing with the dough.......stayed tuned for my next week posting. Thank you for stopping by. Cheers!

The heart shape basket is a bit time consuming, about 2 hours to complete the weaving. No, I'm not going to eat the basket, too nice to be eaten. I'd baked it until very dry to let it last longer.

  56. To be honest Amelia, I saw your post yesterday I was so impressed with the your flowers and baskets that I thought to try flowers and then write a comment. Sadly, with my brown rice flour bread I didn't get good result but I am definitely going to try again with tapioca starch bread. It is more flexible and I have made containers with it. If you wish you can check it here.

    1. Hi Balvinder, thank you for your kind words and compliments.

I think the brown rice bread is not suitable for making the flowers. You need a soft texture bread for easy handling. It's ok, you can get the softer bread and try again. I can't wait to see your creation.

I'd check out your posting, the bread container very nice. Love the ideas, great for parties food.

Have a nice week ahead, regards.

  74. Hi Amelia, Just one word to describe your this outstanding creation of yours....breathtaking!
As an artist paints his masterpiece, you create cakes that are the Mona Lisa of the cake world.
Some people bak cakes. there there those that create cakes....you create.

Words fail to come to mind to describe all what you have created.....
The dexterity, the patience, and that special ingredient called 'love' can be seen in the very well taken pics here.
    Amelia....OUTSTANDING! I am very impressed!

I love creative food art, so as and when time permitted I enjoy playing in my kitchen to create something. Ya, need lots of patience too... or else it'll come out like mesh production. hahaha...

I enjoy playing with photography, my friend gave me lots of photography tips how to take good pictures. So I practically click 60 to 100 times for each of my posting. I spent at least 2 hours in display, presentation and photography. hahaha... like people going for magazine shooting.

      Have a great week ahead,regards.
