You never know what you might find when opening a clam.

There are about 2000 different kinds of clams, but there are two main groups of commercially available clams are soft-shelled and hard-shelled. This seems fairly straightforward, but soft-shelled doesn’t mean soft in the sense of yielding to the touch, like the shell of a soft-shelled crab would. Rather, it refers to clams with shells that are thinner, more brittle and easily broken.

Soft shelled clams can be found in muddy tidal flats and estuaries up and down the east coast of the United States and Canada as well as on the west coast in the UK. They are also found in the Pacific Northwest, but they are not native to the Pacific and are considered an invasive species. Other names for soft-shelled clams include:
Hard-shelled clams can tolerate higher salinity than soft-shelled clams, and they are found in tidal areas along the east coast of North America, and even to depths of about sixty feet. There are several varieties of hard-shelled clams native to the Pacific Northwest, as well.
East-Coast US hard-shelled clams are also known by the names quahog (CO-hog), littleneck and cherrystone.
West-Coast hard-shelled clams include the Pacific Littleneck or rock clam, pismo clam and butter clam.
Some west coast hard-shelled clams are of distinctly different species. The non-native Manila clams are very sweet tasting—sweeter than East coast clams—and are available year-round. The huge geoduck (GOO-ee-duck) clams of the Pacific Northwest and razor clams are likewise available all year.

Even though not everyone is sold on their salty taste and soft and chewy texture, clams are some of the healthiest seafoods that you can eat. These tasty mollusks can be cooked in a variety of ways - steamed, baked, fried or just sauteed. They can also serve as appetizers or as the main dish.
Low in Bad Fat, High in Good Fat
If you are on the road to weight loss then clams are some of the best foods that you can include in your regular diet. With only two grams of fat and a little more than 100 calories per three ounces, eating clams is a great way to satisfy your hunger and gain energy. Clams are also a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, a good type of fat that many people are not getting enough of. Even though clams contain cholesterol, the amount is minimal.

Rich in Iron
Clams are also one of the most iron-rich foods that you can eat. It is so high in iron that it even beats out beef liver and steak when it comes to iron content. When you eat three ounces of cooked clams (about eight to nine small clams), you are receiving as much as 24 milligrams of iron which surpass the RDA-recommended daily amount.
Pre-menopausal women require 18 milligrams of iron per day for good health. Meanwhile, eight milligrams are enough for women who are post-menopausal and adult men. As you can see, women have a much higher need for iron so it's a good idea to eat clams regularly. A deficiency in iron can result in anemia.

Good Source of Lean Protein As you probably know, protein is an important factor in any healthy diet, and lean proteins are even better. If you're tired of regularly eating lean meat or chicken then why not try eating clams for a change? Clams have more protein content than other seafood, such as scallops and oysters. Clams are also proving to be the better choice because even though they contain roughly the same amount of protein, they have more vitamins and minerals than chicken.

Chinese divers return to the coast after diving 60 feet to harvest large farm-grown clams near the country's northeast port city Dalian Each diver, wearing homemade dive suits and breathing through a small tube attached to a compressor on a boat floating above, can harvest nearly 750 clams a day. Market price is around 60 cents a clam.

16/ Drain the glass noodle onto the serving plate. Pour the cooked gravy on top the noodle and serve immediately.

Oh my God!!! Amelia, I’m impressed! Without doubt, I must say your postings are always both educational and interesting! I do agree with you that cooking is an art and it requires that extra instinct to whip up a perfect and extraordinary dish. You are not only intelligent but also a good cook. You always come up with a fantastic and mouth-watering dish that torture us; can see but cannot eat!!!
ReplyDeleteWell, your clam noodles is indeed so delightfully delectable and tantalizing as well. Clams and prawns marry and blend well with cabbage and glass noodles! These are my favourite ingredients too!!! Just one scoop of the gravy itself can see me dancing away in cloud 9!!! I usually cook vegetarian glass noodles but have yet to try this superb dish of yours. Kam Siah my dear :)
Your oreo delight is also so simple and easy to prepare and at once look it's undeniable lip-smacking dessert!! Thanks dear, you are always so generous in sharing your secret recipes with your dear readers. Kam siah kam siah again!!

The oreo delight is very simply and refreshing. You can do it with one eye close. You keep in the freezer, any time you want to eat just top with oreo, kow tim. Or you can add fruits too.

Hi Anaja, thank you. I'm fine. Hope you are doing well too. Thanks for your kind words and compliments. Glad to know you love clams too. Yes, you can cook clams with pasta, it taste as good.
DeleteHave a lovely week ahead,regards.
Funny how 'clams' also was (maybe still is ?) a term for money . Perhaps that had something to do with the pearls found inside some clams. Beautiful shots here, Amelia, but sorry, clams are not high on my list of favourites to eat. Now, about that dessert ...
ReplyDeleteHave a great week.
Hi Rick, thank you for your kind words and compliments. Not all clams produce pearls, only certain species and in certain Island or country you get to find the treasure inside the clams.
DeleteSince you don't take clams, I serve you the oreo dessert, maybe add extra chocolate? :))
Have a great week ahead,regards.
Hi Amelia!
ReplyDeleteAnother tasty post filled with so many interesting tidbits. Really quite amazing the amount of time and cooking you put into your posts!!!
I grew up on the east coast on Long Island and clamming was the way many people made a living at that time. When we were kids we use to go to the beach and dig for clams with our feet! It was such fun! Sometimes my father use to build a fire right on the beach and steam the clams right there! Lots of times we would eat them as we were clamming. They were so delicious right from the water. I sure did get a lot of iron back then, lol...Long Island and The Great South Bay was actually famous for their clams but alas, people got greedy and took the baby clams before they had a chance to be the right size and then we had like a black tide that killed most of the baby clams. Now they "grow" clams on clam farms just like oysters.
Your meal sounds delicious as does that oreo dessert. Now you have me wanting to go "home" to dig for clams. There are no clams here in central Pennsylvania. (Well there might be but...)
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful post, Amelia.
Hi Louise, thank you for sharing your childhood memory. Wow.... it must be very fun to dig the clams and same times grilled and eating it. I bet it must be very sweet and delicious. :))

Thank you for all of this fascinating information about clams and their benefits. I learned a great deal from your post -- I really didn't realize there were so many different types of clams. We often find beautiful clam shells when we go to the beach in North Carolina. I'm not especially fond of clams, but I must say your recipe looks absolutely delicious.
ReplyDeleteHi George, thank you for your lovely compliments. I appreciate it very much. It's great to know that you enjoyed my postings. You're always welcome.
DeleteI love to collect those shells from the beach too. Some of the clams shell are really beautiful. The clam shell you found in North Carolina must be very exotic. ::

Looks tasty! As an Aussie and growing up near the ocean, I love my seafood. I will try anything! In regards to pearls, I have a friend that found a pearl inside a clam over 30 years ago in Dubai (when it was actually a dessert!) On his 30th anniversary he took the pearl to a jeweler and made it into a beautiful pendant which he gave to his wife. The way he told me was a great story :-)

Another beautiful post, dear Amelia! I love clams; even raw, with lemon and hot sauce. It's very popular here in the U.S. to serve raw clams in their shells as appetizers, over a bed of shaved ice. Your clams and shrimp dish with the glass noodles is so amazing and divine, I could eat that entire bowl of this loveliness. I have yet to find any pearl in our cherrystone clams...must be found in the Pacific island, but not here, for sure! Your oreo crumble dessert is a perfect addition for this divine dish! Hugs, and best regards!
ReplyDeleteHi my dear Elisabeth, thank you for your kind words and lovely compliments. Always glad to see you drop by, your words are always very encouraging and give me lots of motivation too.
DeleteI love clams but yet to try eating raw clam except oyster, I tried once only.. But due to our weather here is hot and humid, we try not to take raw salmon or oyster too often.
I yet to discover any pearls too. LOL... but as far as I know you can only find the pearls in certain country and Island. Never mind, lets hope one day we will find a tiny one. :))

Hi Amelia! Wah, I am eyeing your ice cream dessert with the crushed Oreos. But I have to cut back on this first and will go for the clam soup. Must be very flavoursome and tasty. I didn't know that can get pearls from clams :)
ReplyDeleteHi Phong Hong, thank you for your kind words and compliments. Ya, if you're on diet better to hold back the oreo delight cos it's very rich. :)) But the calm noodle no problem for you, no cholesterol. It's very tasty and appetizing.

Hello Amelia, I have always loved seafood, and old days going sea fishing as well looking for clams too, having them freshly cooked.
ReplyDeleteLove this posting and your interesting facts, as well the colourful pics of the clams.
That noodles and clams to die for dish. I guess 2 bowls of that will be fine with me.

To cook clam noodle for you, no problem you can have more than 2 bowl if you want... want to tapau or not?? :)) My cooking all simply hantam one, if not because of blogging I won't bother to measure the ingredients. Usually I just estimate and throw in only....actually cooking it's our magic hands not the recipes.
