Rose Apple And My Memory

The scorching hot weather nowadays in my country Malaysia prompted by El Nino since early January is expected to persist till March. Such weather will cause burning sensation even when the sun has taken over. In these circumstances, adequate water intake is very important so that the fluid in the body will be balanced.

We are fortunate that we have a variety of local fruits in my beloved country, which can serve as a refreshing healthy drink such as mangoes, papaya, pineapple, watermelon and many others. Likewise, there are some vegetables that can be used as drinks which could also serve as source to detox our body such as freshly prepared drinks like cucumber, carrot, celery appropriate mixed with lemon, lime or calamansi.

Rose apple with cucumber and calamansi detox juice.

This beautiful and perfect combination of fresh ingredients is sure to be able to give us freshness throughout the day. One of the local fruits that was my choice during childhood is the rose apple. Oh no, it's not as you might think, the name might mislead you but it is not related to rose and apple at all.

This is larger type of rose apple.

I'm not sure what went wrong, but perhaps due to erratic weather changes caused by natural phenomena or poor soil fertility, the mini rose apple is quite hard to find today. It seems to be increasingly hard to find past years, or perhaps the farmer are now more to focused only on the more profitable fruit, as the local rose apple do not last long once ripe and therefore deemed not viable.

This type of mini  Rose apple, during my childhood it can be easily found in ours or neighborhoods  backyard garden. And each season this plant is practically flourishing throughout my country.

My childhood favorite dipping sauce, black caramel sauce mix with sugar and slice chili.

This type of rose apple are commonly found in our local market.

There are various types of rose apple and can be found in many different colors. It can be eaten on its own when ripe or can also be varied according to our liking. Usually we will make the drink by adding a little sugar and lime or fruit salad or "Rojak" ( Malaysia Salad)

Simple and refreshing fruits salad with roasted ground peanuts, chia seeds and plum sauce.
Mix plum sauce with water and a bit of sugar to taste.

Cut rose apple, honey dew, guava, mango into julienne, slice the torch ginger thinly.

Mix the cut fruits with  roasted groundnuts, chia seeds and plum sauce before serving.

Incidentally rose apple keep special memories in my life. I would like to share it here as it just so happen to relate to my post, and no not to expect sympathy.

I was among those who were less fortunate. I did not get the love of my mother as I was given away when I was born, due to unforeseen circumstances my parents gave me away to another family. I was adopted and was brought up by my adopted family consist of grandma, uncles and aunties.

Even until today I have not seen how my father looks or where is he.......whether he is still alive or passed on. But even then, I am still thankful that I was brought into this world, was loved by my mother even for a while. Through this history I became a steadfast and strong person. I learned a lot about the life of what is around me, through the stories I've heard and from books that I read.

All drawings are compliments from my daughter.

One of the stories I have ever read and had a profound impact on my life is related to the rose apple and two animals who had been friends.

They are Squirrel and Tortoise. Squirrel is an animal that is very diligent, honest, loyal, kind and considerate to his companion, tortoise. While the tortoise seems to be quiet and not as active as his best friend, the squirrel, they were inseparable.

Every day the Tortoise will frolic in the river under the shade of rose apple tree. During the fruit season, the rose apple tree will bear fruit heavily.  The two best friends would have fun enjoying rose apple at it is very sweet and juicy. Even though Tortoise could  not climb the tree,  it was able to eat fresh fruit anytime because the Squirrel will drop only the best and freshest fruit to Tortoise. Yes, Squirrel could have enjoyed the fruits all by herself anytime but she never failed to wait for Tortoise with steadfast loyalty to enjoyed the fruits together. That's what the Squirrel did each day to her beloved friend.

It has become common in every relationship there comes a time that  friendships are put to test. In this story, the Tortoise is not as good and honest as the Squirrel. He has kept a bad feeling towards the Squirrels. Tortoise always took things for granted and then he started to get jealous of Squirrel abilities. For him Squirrel was just a tool to achieve something that he wants. There were times when Squirrel felt offended over some bad attitude shown by the Tortoise but she was not calculative.

Squirrel accepted Tortoise as who he was. To her every creature certainly has its imperfections. Nobody is perfect.

Unfortunately dissatisfaction by Tortoise towards the Squirrel never stopped. He not only wanted to use her but even want to hurt Squirrel continuously. But he was smart enough to hide his evil intentions. But it turned out that the evil heart cannot be hidden with a smile. Tortoise ultimately intended to eliminate the Squirrel for reasons that only he knows. Without the knowledge of honest Squirrel, Tortoise had planned something for her.

One day Tortoise looked very sad and sick, refused to eat the rose apple that Squirrel plucked for him. Squirrel was so worried and concerned towards Tortoise being not well.

Squirrel: What happen to you, my dear?
Tortoise: Oh, I'm very sick.
Squirrel: Is there anything I can help you? Is there any medicine that can cure your illness? Tell me my dear, I will certainly try to get it no matter what the challenges are. I will not let you alone in trouble.
Tortoise: Oh dear, its very kind of you but the medicine that I need can't be found here. It is just there on an island that is very far from here. I would not dare to go there alone.
Squirrel: Don't worry my dear, I'll go with you but oh, I can't swim.
Tortoise: It's ok, you can ride on my back.

The tortoise was very happy with the agreement of the Squirrel. Which by the way his evil intentions will be realized eventually. The Squirrel jumped on the back of Tortoise in no time without any prejudice. She was willing to risk her life for her beloved friend, and even brought some supplies stalk of rose apple in case Tortoises need along the way to the island.

So they travel thru the river and in the middle of the river, the Tortoise purposely submerse Squirrel in the water several times. Squirrel feel uneasy about what has been done by Tortoises against her. Furthermore she felt the journey was very far and took  too long. It adds to worry when Tortoise repeatedly stated "we are almost there" but there wasn't any island in front of them.

Squirrels finally had the courage to ask the Tortoise. "My friend, are you planning something against me? Are you hiding something from me? Please be frank, I am ready to listen and help you do my best."

The Tortoise pretend to be very sad. With a tone that was so choked he replied, "My dear..I would like to apologize for having deceived you. The truth is the medicine I was talking about does not exist in any island. The remedy for my illness actually can only be found in you.

Squirrel was shocked by the answer of Tortoise. There was fear in her heart. She suspected the bad intentions of Tortoise. But she had to pretend to be calm and asked Tortoise again, "What do you mean, my dear?"

Tortoise ostensible more sad. With a voice that faltered he said, "My friend ... please forgive me again. Actually ... my illness can only be cured if I...if I...if I eat your heart".

Squirrels almost fainted upon hearing what has been said by the Tortoise. She felt very sad. After all the love, trust and sacrifice that has been done to Tortoises, and this is how she is being treated by the Tortoise?

Somehow Squirrel finally got an idea. With a calm tone she told Tortoise. "My friend, why didn't you telling me the truth from the beginning?"

Tortoise was so surprised and asked, "why oh my friend?"

"Because as we squirrels do not bring our hearts along when we leave our homes"
"What do you mean?" asked the Tortoise.
"Yes, I have left my heart at home. We had to go home to take my heart and give it as a cure to your illness, my friend"

Tortoise was silent but had to agree.
They finally turned back to take the Squirrel's heart that had been left at home. Tortoise cannot wait to eat his friend's heart because in the end Squirrel would get sick and die without her heart.

Squirrel jumping on branches of rose apple's tree and disappear in no time once they get to the riverbank, where they often play and eat together. Tortoise waited for quite some time.

After a long time Squirrel does not appear, Tortoise screamed for his friend. "My friend, where are you? Where is your heart that you have promised to me? You cannot let me wait a long time here! You know I'm not a patient person!!"

Squirrel finally emerged in between the leaves and rose apple. "I'm sorry I had to lie to you. I never leave my heart anywhere. My heart is always here!" - Said the Squirrel in sad tone, patting her chest then continued, "All these while I have been honest and very fond of you, I was willing to do anything for you, as long as you're happy, that's enough for me as a loyal friend. I could not believe what you have done to me, I totally did not expect that you will be so cruel. Is this the meaning of friendship for you? Are you willing to see me in pain and eventually die for the sake of your bad intention? You are so mean and heartless. From now on you're not my friend anymore. I bid farewell to you. We will never see each other again. Goodbye."

Tortoise felt very embarrassed and realized his bad deeds against Squirrel. He was very apologetic but it was too late. He has lost a very good friend who has been good to him over the years. Henceforth, he never again met Squirrel. He had lost his friendship with Squirrel forever.

Since then, the Tortoise was no longer be able to enjoy fresh rose apple, but only those rotten and smelly rose apples that fell into the river itself.

This is the story of two friends and a rose apple that has left a very deep impact on me. Here I learned the value of friendship. We do not need to expect a reward. Instead, we need honesty, loyalty and kind thought which are the key to guarantee a true friendship.

Have a nice week ahead, enjoy.

  1. Hi Amelia:)
I have never heard of this fruit you call the Rose Apple. It's too bad because it looks like a refreshing fruit. I bet you're right, it probably doesn't transport well and hence it is not grown as widely. It's too bad. So many fruits and vegetables have been neglected for the same reason. Your fruit salad looks very refreshing and colorful. We are not having scorching weather like you but like you, we had an unusual season. We will have to see what Spring brings:)

Your daughter's drawings are very well done. Looks like you have an artist on your hands, lol...My grandson seems to be interested in drawing too. Children are so talented these days.

What a heartfelt story you have shared today, Amelia. I think we all have times in our lives that we wish didn't happen or could somehow change but, it is these moments of the past that make us who we are today. This story reminds us to appreciate our friends for who they are and not for enriching our lives for their own prosperity. Thank you for sharing it, dear Amelia...

  3. Hi Amelia, I really love reading and learning about Rose Apples. I had never seen or heard of it before. You blog post is so interesting. I especially love reading your beautiful story. I hope that you publish it some day because it has a great life lesson in it. Being betrayed by a friend is so hurtful. You can forgive them but like a piece of wood in which nails have been hammered in and removed, the scar remains for life. You sound like a gentle soul.

Your daughter is a talented artist like my granddaughter. I love her drawings.
Here it's 7:58 PM and at your place it's 6:58 am.

    Have a great new week.
    Hugs,

  4. I think my comment didn't go through somehow so I'll try again...
I love reading your story and I think it would make a great children's book. The lesson it teaches is a good one. Being betrayed by a friend is very hurtful. You can forgive them but it's like a piece of wood in which nails have been hammered and then removed. The scars will remain forever.

Thanks for posting about the rose apples. I had never heard about it before now and I learned something new today. Here it's 8:27 PM and in Malaysia it's 7:27 AM.

Your daughter has some great talent for drawing like my granddaughter. She does beautiful illustrations.

  7. Hi Amelia
What a lovely post this is. The pictures so sweet as sweet as the rose apple.

Those rose apple mouth-watering drinks and salad is just nice for our current hot weather. This fruit used to grow behind my grandmother’s house during my childhood days and i remember my cousins and i climbing the trees picking the juicy red fruits and eating thrm fresh from the tree.

I love your story about the friendship between the squirrel and the tortoise. There is a compelling message in tne story that all of us should learn. Betrayal of friends must be one of most tragic human weaknesses. I too have a fair share of such and yes it hurts a lot. People say time heals, yeah it does but the scars remain forever.

I am happy to know that you do not bear ill feelings against your parents for giving you away for adoption. I guess they have their reasons. We can only be thankful to God that you were adopted by a good family and treated you like their own, cos dear, look at you know. You turn out well, have good family, good friends, you are beautiful, funny, intelligent, talented, generous and kind. Hey, not bad eh? Hehe..

Love your putting in your daughter’s drawing. She is really good and the pictures of squirrel and tortoise, sòo cute and adorable. You are really creative.

Well done and congrats for a wonderful post. Keep it up.

  8. Hello Amelia, this is such a wonderful story. Snippets of it came back as I read it but in my childhood story it wasn't rose apples and it wasn't a squirrel. But the tortoise was in it.
Till Dec/15 I had only seen the cream-coloured ones. I saw the red ones in Goa in December. It's amazing at how many ways you can have this fruit. I have only had them raw.
This is another beautiful post and I clung on to every word till the end of the story. Your daughter's drawings are lovely and this fact that you shared about your parents touched me.

  10. Hello dear Amelia,
So sorry, we janji nak publish entry but i had to be awsy from home hence away from my desktop.
Nanti i balik penang next week i publish, hehe kita punya blog dua dua pun sudah frozen ;)

Rose Apple, baru i tau it is actually jambu air. And yes the smaller type is hard to get now, only the bigger ones are aplenty. And i only eat them with the hot dipping sauce or with the "asam powder" but looking at your colourful, plateful of fruits makes mouth water, so cantik i will do the same the next time i have gatherings.

Amelia, don't know what to say abt yr adoption, nor do i know how you feel. Whatever it is, you have to keep on loving unconditionally your adoptive family. Same time not blaming real parents for giving you away, they must have goodvreadons for that.

Ladtly being betrayed by good friend really hurts but live must go on...

Good nite and i promise entry nxt week :))

  11. Hello Amelia, great posting. I guess the last time I ate these Rose apples was wayyyyy back in the '70s when at the East Coast, a friend's house garden tree.
When very young, both my grandfathers had these Rose apple trees in the backyard, as well side of the house, and my cousins and I had fun climbing the trees enjoying these succulent fruits.
I have seen these Rose apples on sale here at the Chinese supermarkets. They from Thailand and Vietnam, but the prices puts me off.

Regret read of your unfortunate history, but I guess they must have had their reasons or circumstances in giving you away for adoption. No parent or parents would give away their child unless thru dire financial or domestic circumstances. But glad you bear them no ill feelings and today living a life with your own family.

I love your Rose apples salad, and that dip sauce....I sure will have a PR at the table with that salad presentation....love the way you display that salad.

Love your Squirrel and Tortoise story, there's a moral to that story.....and your daughter sure good at drawing, love her style, outstanding!
And its true that 'Betrayal'...it comes from friends and loved ones'.
    Once again an impressive posting.
    Have a great week.
    Lee.

  12. When I was small I used to eat rose apple a lot during summer time.. I only saw the yellow.. I never saw red rose apple.. Here in the US I've never seen rose apple...

And about the story, I also read same kind of story during my childhood, but instead of the squirrel and tortoise the animals were monkey and crocodile, and the fruit was mango..
The illustrations are awesome.. your daughter is a talented illustrator...
Love to see your post.. your posts are always very informative...

  13. Hi Amelia! I know these rose apples as jambu air. Yes, they are quite hard to find these days. Once in a while I see them at Aeon. I am not really a fan of rose apple but I do enjoy them in rojak or eaten with a belacan dip. Are those photos of rose apples from your kebun?

Your daughter is a very talented illustrator. I love the drawings for that very meaningful story.

I am sure your parents made a very difficult decision. But through it all, you have become a wonderful person. God bless you Amelia!

  14. Hi Amelia,
Yes that's the way I ate jambu air with dark sauce + sugar + chilli when I was young, lived in kampong. Nowadays can hardly find sweet juicy ones.
In life there's always many shortcomings and some unfortunate that many of us have gone through. But count our blessings too. Lovely drawing that your daughter drew.
Have a wonderful week ahead :)

  15. I never knew the english name of this fruit till today Amelia:) Such an appropriate name...it's one of my favourite tropical fruit when I was growing up, but we just eat it as it is or dub it with a bit of salt back then...I miss them now:( Thank you for sharing your stories too...we all have something of the past that hurts...That's always a part of life. Many lessons along the way to take in, but keep counting the blessings...because it always exceeds much more:) Amelia, we cannot grow Rose Apple here ...but I do have Roses and Apple trees in the garden;P. BTW, just love that photo of a very fruitful Rose Apple tree:) Stay blessed my friend!

  17. Hi, my dear friend, Amelia! Loved the sweet story about the squirrel and tortoise, and the illustration drawings of your daughter is very talented, and creative! It really is true the the betrayal comes from our families and close friends, not from enemies. Our enemies will stay as enemies...and our close friends and families will become the 'enemies'! Sad, but true!

I love the beautiful rose apples, and the delicious salad plate you made with the apples. Unfortunately we don't get these lovely apples here, in S. Florida, and have never even seen them here! Take care, and have a wonderful week! I am thinking of you, especially now that you divulged childhood memories of your past. Sometimes it's better to be given up for adoption to a good caring, and loving family, than to be kept in a home where parents cannot care for their child or financial situation does not allow to keep them! A dear friend of mine was adopted from Italy into the U.S. when he was 10yrs old. Mother passed away, and father could not care for 6 children so he sent of the 8 and 10 year old brothers to America! Eventually, over the years as an adult, my friend went back to visit with his family, but it was never the same, and they never really connected. At least he was together with his younger brother with the loving and caring adopted parents! You are strong and have become a better person, from the lessons you've learned throughout in your life! Hugs, and kisses to you!

  20. Hi Amelia, very beautiful post.
Most of the fruits available in your country have become common here. In Kerala people are crazy about Malaysian fruits. Many have such huge cultivation here of exotic plants and trees.
Rose apple is one of my favorites :)
I am also on the look out for summer smoothies. I drink chilled buttermilk to cool down.
The Summer is very intense here too this time.

    Happy and blessed Easter :)
